Important Elements of your Golf Swing

It is imperative that you strengthen your hips, legs, stomach and lower back prior to golfing. This will help insure that you have a stable basic stance when addressing the ball. It will also make your swing more powerful and accurate. This stance increases your body control throughout the different shots, terrains, etc. that you will encounter on the course.

I see a lot of golfers that have a rounded back when they are addressing the ball. This awkward position pulls all the powerful muscles out of their proper position, and predisposes them to a back injury. (Not to mention how it decreases your ability to load on your backswing.) With a straight upper back you will decrease the forces pressing on the discs in the spinal region. This posture may help keep you off of my Spinal Decompression Machine!

Low Back Pain: One Symptom, Many Causes

· Strenuous activity, overuse or improper use (repetitive or heavy lifting, vibration, pressure, etc.)

· Physical trauma, injury or fracture

· Obesity (often caused by increased weight on the spine and pressure on the spinal discs)

· Protruding or herniated (slipped) disk

· Tightness, spasm, injury and strain of back muscles

· Joint problems (e.g., spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal canal, which compresses the spinal cord and the nerve roots)

· Poor muscle tone in the core or stabilizing muscles of the back

Golf, Posture and Chiropractic

We all know what a great game golf is? It is a sport you can play into your 70’s and there is nothing better then the scent of fresh cut grass in the air.

Recently I was on vacation, and I was able to frequent the golf course on three different occasions. I love watching golfers hit golf balls, because everyone seems to do it in a different fashion? The driving range is the most fun to watch, because people are trying to crush the ball.

The one ingredient I noticed that was missing in 90% of the golfers was they all had improper posture while addressing the golf ball. That is kind of like Kobe Bryant trying to shoot free throws facing in the wrong direction. It is not going to happen! I trained with Paul Callaway of Body Balance for Performance a few years ago, and that was one of his pet peeves.

Most golfers have tight chest muscles, and weak stomach/core muscles. In my chiropractic clinic I also find that most right handed golfers have a very tight right hip region overall. Playing golf like this is equivalent to driving your car with the emergency brake on.

The solution to this above common scenario is to get a full body golf evaluation! This will help detect weaknesses and will help strengthen and fine tune your body. The end result is an improved golf game.

In my chiropractic clinic I have 24 years experience helping golfers reach their true potential. We also have Spinal Decompression available to help eliminate chronic back pain.

Chiropractic and Golf!

The key to golf longevity is having a strong back. Back injuries can ruin your golf score, and possibly keep you off the course. To a dedicated golfer, this can be worse then losing big on the stock market!

The spine consists of 24 bones which are separated by a soft tissue made of cartilage. When the spine is healthy, it is capable of handling tremendous stress. When the spinal bones move out of place, they put stress on the spinal nerves. This can cause pain, weakness, numbness, etc.

The golf swing involves flexing and twisting of the spine. Golfers must consider themselves athletes, and train using up to date training programs. One survey showed that 53% of professional golfers play while injured. While 53% of male recreational golfers suffered from back pain. If you play golf along with other sports you’re 40% more likely to develop back pain then those that just play golf.

Golfers use 90% of their maximum muscular activity when driving a golf ball. This is performed about 40 times per game. This level of maximum exertion puts golf on the same level with football, wrestling and martial arts.

Chiropractors are experts of the spine, and nervous system. In my clinic we treat many golfers, for various types of injuries. The most common complaint is low back pain. Low back injuries do not allow golfers to get into the proper position to address the golf ball. This in turn sets up the golfer for failure, and leads to many other injuries.

Golfers are welcome in my clinic to a Free consultation to determine if they may improve their golf game through chiropractic  care. Contact me through this blog.
